After sharing my daughter’s bedroom recently, I had a lot of feedback that my readers want to see more of my home – you ask, I deliver! I’m excited to share my nursery with you all.

How to start designing a room

If you feel overwhelmed and don’t know how to start decorating a room, here’s what you should do:

  1. Start a Pinterest board for inspiration. Narrow down your favorite aesthetic, considering colors, textures, and specific elements you want for the room.
  2. Choose one element to start with to build the room around. This could be an area rug, paint color, or piece of furniture.
  3. You can online shop so you can “see” all of your products together and shop at once or get pieces one-by-one as you find them in stores.

When designing the nursery, I already had the crib and knew I had to choose wallpaper for an accent wall to start – I’m kind of a wallpaper fanatic…and area rugs…and throw pillows.

I linked sources for the major elements at the bottom – if I missed something that you’d like, just leave me a comment.

I was in wallpaper heaven after my husband installed this beautiful paper and wanted to keep with the soft, feminine elements. We replaced the generic builders-grade light fixture with this sweet crystal chandelier (it’s less than $60!). I had the silk taffeta curtains from the nursery in our old house but wasn’t sure where I wanted them. By piecing things together one by one, I knew they’d work well in this room. I do need to hem them though – they don’t “pool” beautifully on carpet.

If you’re not feeling it when you’re decorating a room, don’t think you need to throw in the towel and start from scratch – I often fall deep into a panicked pit of despair when things aren’t going as planned, but that’s highly unproductive. Try moving furniture around, and if you can’t visualize things like me, have your mom come over and make your husband move things around at least 10 times before you’re happy. This always does the trick.

I have two of these large gold frames just resting on this dresser (below); I can’t decide if I’ll hang them adjacent on the wall or above the crib – any thoughts? The text in them is kind of a cool story. I wrote an extended poem to my girls (that I’m going to publish in the next year!) and have it in 5 frames around their room. If you can add a personalized special touch, I think it’s always a good idea.

When I originally saw this couch, I fell in love with it in pink. It was sold out everywhere, but my heart was set, so I waited. And waited. And waited. Until I couldn’t wait anymore and asked my husband if I should take the plunge and try it in green -he said no. And that’s the story of how we got the green couch.

It’s actually a futon and is INCREDIBLY comfortable for everything from story time to full-blown napping. That’s where Olive slept last night after she climbed out of her crib. I also have the couch in pink in the playroom.
